TREATS!

Posted by avatar on March 12, 2014

CALLING ALL CAT AND DOGS IT’S TREAT TIME!

I’m sure they are out there but hard to find….a Dog or Cat who doesn’t like TREATS!

My dogs are obsessed with treats. If they meet someone in the park with treats in their pocket, Jake is all over them.  The Downside to Treats is they can make your animal fat….like humans too much of a good thing is not so good for the health. So what to give, how much and what kind is the million dollar question. I don’t know the answer…but I did go to a great dog show and found the following products that Jake and Sammy think are great, with very good health ingredients! And best of all they are made here in Canada 😀

www.noahsarkpettreats.com – The Sardines are great for both Cats and Dogs

www.JustBeefAndNothingBut.com  –Beef Jerky

photo 3

www.puppylovepetproducts.ca – All kinds and can be found at Tisol and I do believe they have a cat line as well.

I’m not too knowledgeable on cat treats so if you know of any good ones that I can add to this blog please send me a message on the Sammy and Stone Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/sammyandstone.

Clipping nails on a wiggle worm

Posted by avatar on March 7, 2014

As many of you animal owners know clipping a cat or dog nails of is not easy. It’s best to invest in good nail clippers for your cat or dog. For dogs it’s a really good idea to get your dog use to you touching their paws. Sammy is ok with us touching his paws (he even likes a paw message) Jake on the other hand HATES his being touched. So clipping Sammy nails is not as bad as Jakes. I wish I had know about getting Jake use to having his paws ouched sooner but now that he’s almost 11 that ship has sailed.

What do I do to get Jakes nails clipped….Well its a 2 day process, maybe if we’re lucky we can do it in a day.

1. I have to get the treats out. Most important even with Sammy he loves to get rewards for a good job, and who wouldn’t :D.

2. Make sure they have gone a good walk and are a bit tired to struggle.

3. Calmly with lost of praise lie down with Jake with clipper in hand, no fumbling as once you do you have lost the Chi to get the ball rolling.

4. Make sure to to touch the pawn firmly but not too hard. Firmly so they don’t recoil their paw as your aiming for a nail as that’s when an accident can happen.

5. Do it FAST, get small tops of the nail (see pics below for proper angle). You do not need to get a lot of the nail because then your in danger of clipping into the quick.

6. If you are successful with all the nails in one round, check them all and see if any other nail may need a tiny bit more clipped and get only those. This moment is traumatic , so you need to be precise an again FAST.

7. All the while you tell them good boy, girl, good kitty. Coo them with positive soft voice. This makes it less traumatic for them.

8. Once you done give them a treat!

9. Put the clippers away.

10. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done 😀

The Story of Sammy (AKA pisser pants, stinky face)

Posted by avatar on March 3, 2014

The story of Sammy is a happy one because he too was rescued but the first year of his life was HELL. Sammy’s came from a Puppy Mill situation, better known as hell on earth for dogs. We don’t know and likely never will know exactly what happened but he and a Teacup Yorkie escaped. They were in rough shape…Sammy was so matted he could not see or poop, malnourished, long clawed paws he and Missy just looked defeated. Missy (who is now with my Parents in Toronto) was in the same sad state. We took them in and started the extremely hard process of getting them to be dogs again. Any of you who have rescued a puppy mill or hoarding situation animal will understand, it is unlike any other rescue. It’s the hardest because they really don’t know how to be dogs. They don’t know how to eat, walk on a leash, poop/pee. It took  a year before life and the house was normal again. Sammy and Missy were also so bonded that it was hard to socialize them with other dogs. We finally decided to give Missy to my Parents as she needed to be with someone 24/7, and my Parents are retired. They love her so much and she is their Princess.

Today Sammy is a well adjusted dog. He has a quirky personality and he still pee’s on bags 😀 but all in all he is just perfect. Jake and Sammy tolerate each other but there is no LOVE there. I think they like each others company but you will never see them playing together. Well you will see Jake trying to herd Sammy, which Sammy HATES.

Oh and Sammy is either a Havanese or a Multi Poo we are not sure. We are sure of one thing ….we are happy to have given them a new home with a warm bed and lots of love.

Jake (AKA Romeo)

Posted by avatar on February 25, 2014

I few of you have been asking me to give you more info on Sammy and Jake, since they are obviously featured in my blogs.

The story Jake. I adopted Jake in Jan of 2004 from the SPCA in Vancouver, he was 5 months old. He was in a cage with a very upset Basset Hound and was licking the Basset hounds head to make he/she feel better. He was in the first cage and his shelter name was Romeo. I whispered to him “I have to give the other dogs a chance” and turn to a look at the other cages I walked around looking at all the sad doggy faces and wished I could adopt them all. As I  walked back towards Romeo’s cage, Romeo started to walking wagging his tail towards me and and licked my hand (tears) LOVE. I walked up to the front and handed in two names because I did feel I had to give other dogs a chance. The SPCA worker says well Suzie needs a lot of training, Romeo is a great dog and I think a better suit for you. She then let’s me take Romeo for a walk. He was just so perfect and I couldn’t  think that I would not leave without him and I did!. AS we got int my car I looked at him, me a single girl said..geesh i can’t keep your name. I looked at him and the first name that came to my mind was Jake. This Dog is the most amazing dog. Smart, independent, and Handsome :D. He has been my rock through single times, marriage, and so much more. I want to clone him. More to come stay tuned!

Oh My You Have Stinky Breath

Posted by avatar on February 23, 2014

My Husband and I are always greeted in the morning by Sammy licking our faces. Sammy just waits for any movement to pounce on us. We love his morning ritual BUT man does he have stinky breath. Now I brush his teeth and even found an all natural Dog Mouth Spray at a dog show we went to last week. It does seem to work but spraying their mouths with it is not easy. My dogs act like I’m torturing them when i give them anything other then a treat. The smell I’m talking about here is a bit exaggerated as they don’t have any intestinal problems. And although they should have their teeth cleaned I do brush at least 3 times a week. I am hesitant to put them under for fear of them never waking. So I’ve decided I am going to try K9 gentle dental. I saw them at the dog show last week. Its a teeth cleaning with no anesthetic. I’m wondering if anyone has tried it?. Seems to be all the rage but what if your dog really needs serious dental work? They boast that its a highly trained vet tech who does it and can will let you know if the Dog  teeth or doable with no anesthetic. I wonder if this could apply to cats too? Well more research is needed and I will let you know how it goes…for now I’m off to spray their mouths 😀

Cat vs Dog attitude!

Posted by avatar on February 16, 2014

It still perplexes me the Cat vs. Dog attitude. Jake LOVES chasing cats ….like LOVES. So the other day we are in the park and this bruiser of a cat come waltzing into the park. It was suddenly like the the world stopped for the dogs…Clint Eastwood (I’m giving the cat this name) keeps walking into the park whilst the dogs just stop in their tracks staring wagging their tails, like ewww lookie what we have here.  Out of the gate runs Jake full bore towards the cat..FULL TILT BOOGIE! Clint Eastwood stops and poof goes its tail, up goes its back. Jake running full tilt tackles the cat. Clint takes his catboy stance and scratches the shit out of Jake’s faces. Jake then runs away whaling like a baby. Clint the cat still with poof tail and arched back looks towards the other dogs 3 (including Jake), like who’s next. They watch Jake whimper and rub his nose into the grass and immediately they tuck their tails under themselves, and cower. Clint the cat continue to walk on like the winner he is. As the cat continues on the dogs watch with such intense I don’t want to get hurt look, all you can do is laugh. Dog survived, Cat definitely survived. Did Jake learn his lesson HELL no! Will he chase after a cat again HELL yes. Clint the Cat won and I admire the tenacity of Clint the cat….I wish I had that kind of hutzpa.

I decided to do some research to see if indeed there was some kind of history, theory behind the cat and dog relationship and I found really nothing. I did find that there are more dogs and cats that live harmoniously. I think that some dogs like the chase 😀

Long Car rides!

Posted by avatar on February 13, 2014

My Husband and I decided to head up to our Cabin just North of Kamloops this past weekend. We also had a little smoochie Pepper girl that we were babysitting. We load up the truck, dogs and all and off we go. Now Sammy J has always been car sick and you would think by now and how often he is in a car he would be over but noooo.

We do everything to try and make him comfortable. We raise his bed so he can see forward, we don’t feed him until he gets to the destination, for fear of projectile vomit. No matter what we do he  still he salivates, drools to the point that his bed ends up being a pool of doggy drool wetness, YUCK!.

On our way home however things changed :D. We did all the usual tricks but this time Pepper the super cute Rat Terrier cuddled up next to Sammy J and there they lied together in harmoney. I have to say it was cuteness overload. I guess I have to get another dog or a hot water bottle next time.

We, Dogs all had a fabulous time romping in the snow in a beautiful winter paradise.

Cat Scratch Fever!

Posted by avatar on January 28, 2014

Cat’s like to scratch like a dog likes to sniff. So what is the best way or item a cat owner can buy to help their feline friend get their scratch on! So I went searching.

Note #1 – The scratch post/item needs to meet the cats needs not yours. Meaning if it looks pretty to you, your cat may not care less. If the post/item is being used by the cat but is ugly…well then it’s an ugly item that will be in your living room. Not hidden in the corner where your cat can’t get at. That’s why  your cat right now is needing it’s claws into the arms of your favourite couch still.

Note #2 The post/item also needs to have a rough texture and Sisal seems to be the best bet.  If the post is covered in carpet, chances are all that will happen is that kitty’s nails will get stuck in the carpet loops. That’s a sure way to drive him back to scratching on your sofa again. Cardboard is also a winner with some cats. Cats like posts that are all, they like to claw climb at the same time. So the higher/taller the post the more fun your cat will have.

Note #3 Most of all NEVER declaw your cat. The research says to be patient and try a couple of post and eventually they will start to use them.  When you’re home a spray bottle with water is also good to stop them from clawing your furniture. There are so many website’s for Cat Scratcher’s, even cardboard scratchers are cool.

Dangerous Foods and Houshold Plants for Cats and Dogs

Posted by avatar on January 6, 2014

Plants and food that are harmless to humans can make your pet sick and in some cases be lethal to them. If you have a moochie Cat or Dog like I do, you could accidentally give them something from your plate that could make them very sick. Maybe even some of you found yourselves with a pet who had a very poopie butt over the holidays. As friends and family visited for dinner parties or festive get together’s, they may have slipped your pet a little treat. Or did you just adopt a new Cat or Dog and don’t understand why they’re getting sick sometimes.

Below are lists of foods and plants to avoid either feeding or having in your home and a link to an Emergency clinic in Vancouver. Please check your area for 24/7 Emergency vets close to you. http://www.animaler.com/
